Learning opportunities for Perry High School Gifted & Talented students extend beyond the classroom through monthly local field trips designed to connect students with members of the Perry community.
Two PHS Gifted & Talented students, Ryan James and Connor Morris, recently visited D Street Bakes & Coffee, where owners Royce and Crystal Stephens welcomed the students and shared their experiences as local business owners.
The Stephens shared their backgrounds, the story behind their businesses, and their love for the town of Perry. They talked with the students about their desire to create a place that makes a positive difference in the community and shared both the challenges and blessings that come with opening and operating a small business.
One of the most meaningful parts of their conversation was hearing how much the Stephens enjoy seeing customers leave D Street happier and ready to return to their day. The students were able to experience that feeling firsthand while enjoying some of the bakery's offerings during their visit.
PHS Gifted & Talented teacher Shanna Sweet expressed her appreciation to Royce and Crystal Stephens for taking the time to visit with her students and provide them with an authentic look at entrepreneurship and community involvement.
The GT program will continue its local field trip series next month with a visit to the Perry Police Department, giving students another opportunity to learn from local professionals and explore the many ways people contribute to the Perry community.
