September brings Read an Accurate Ag Book Week, an annual, nationwide celebration designed to help elementary students build agricultural literacy through engaging, accurate books about agriculture. In Oklahoma, the effort is organized by Oklahoma Ag in the Classroom, which encourages educators, families, and community members to help students better understand where their food, clothing, and other everyday products come from and the important role agriculture plays in our lives.
As part of this year’s celebration, Mrs. Sullins’ kindergarten class welcomed Mignon Bolay to read Farm Boots. Mignon made the story come to life by bringing 13 different pairs of boots for students to see. The students learned that farmers use different types of boots throughout the four seasons of farming, with each pair serving a special purpose.
The experience gave students an opportunity to connect the story they were hearing with real-life examples from agriculture. The students loved seeing the different boots and learning more about the work farmers do throughout the year.
