Perry Public Schools is excited to announce a new addition to the walking trail at Perry Junior High that combines literacy, outdoor recreation, and community engagement, all thanks to a partnership with Ditch Witch and The Toro Company.
In the spring, Ditch Witch Giving Ambassador Michele Custer reached out to the school district about collaborating on a meaningful project during Global Volunteer Month. At the same time, Perry Junior High teacher Shelynn Kelly had been thinking of a way to enhance the school's walking trail while creating something the entire community could enjoy.
The result is a brand-new Story Walk, an interactive outdoor reading experience that encourages families, students, and community members to stay active while enjoying a great book together.
The Story Walk features a series of display boards placed along a walking trail, allowing visitors to read a story two pages at a time as they walk. The free activity is designed for readers of all ages.
"When offered the chance to partner with Ditch Witch and The Toro Company, it was an immediate yes," said Ms. Kelly. "I wanted a project that made 'Earth Day every day' for our whole community. Through our monthly Story Walk, complete with student-researched nature facts, our class is thrilled to give something back to everyone."
Custer said the partnership was a perfect fit for Ditch Witch and The Toro Company’s commitment to giving back. "We were excited to partner with the school for Global Volunteer Month because this project allows us to directly support students while strengthening our local community."
Ms. Kelly's Foundational Learning class will take ownership of the project by changing the featured story throughout the year, giving visitors a new experience with each visit. Students will also incorporate nature facts they have researched, adding an educational component that encourages curiosity about the environment.
The first story has already been installed and is ready for the community to enjoy before the new school year begins. The Story Walk begins at the south end of the pond and follows the existing walking trail west before looping back across the bridge, creating an enjoyable path for readers and walkers alike. To follow the path more easily, and keep your place in the story, the pages are numbered.
In addition to funding the Story Walk displays, Ditch Witch and TTC also donated two new trash receptacles for the trail, helping keep the area clean and beautiful for everyone who visits.
Perry Public Schools extends its sincere gratitude to Ditch Witch and TTC, and everyone who helped bring this creative vision to life. Their generosity has created a lasting resource that promotes literacy, outdoor activity, environmental awareness, and community connection.

Community members are invited to visit the Story Walk and experience it for themselves. The Perry Junior High walking trail is open to the public outside of school hours. Once school begins in August, the trail will be closed on school days from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to ensure student safety.
