Sled Dog Stories: First Graders Learn About the Iditarod

Perry first-grade students recently had an exciting and educational visit from a special guest. Doug Aichele shared his experiences on the Iditarod Trails and brought along one of his sled dogs, Gabbie, for the students to meet.

During the visit, Mr. Aichele explained the different roles sled dogs play and how they assist mushers throughout the grueling race. He also discussed the physical demands placed on the dogs and the special care mushers provide to ensure their teams stay healthy and strong.

The visit was the culmination of a unit in which first-grade students explored the history of the Iditarod, followed specific mushers, learned about sled dogs, and studied Alaska’s geography. Teachers invited Mr. Aichele to help wrap up the unit with a firsthand account of life on the trail.

Students were thrilled to hear stories from the race and even had the opportunity to pet Gabbie, making the learning experience both interactive and memorable. The visit provided a unique chance for students to connect classroom lessons with real-world experiences, sparking curiosity about animals, teamwork, and life in Alaska.
